Law Enforcement Officer I
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Protects life, property, and enforces the laws of the Commonwealth, as well as, regulations of the University within appropriate jurisdictional confines. Conducts campus patrols; enforces State laws and institutional rules; investigates complaints, suspicious activities, crime, and traffic accidents; makes arrest and issues citations. Provides court testimony and initiates written reports. Operate police communications equipment.
Demonstrated ability handling firearms. Must be a certified Law Enforcement Officer, or eligible to be certified as mandated by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS). Possess a valid Virginia’s Driver License. Working knowledge of basic law enforcement concepts and fundamentals. Demonstrated ability communicating effectively both orally and in writing. High school diploma or GED is required. Ability to function mentally and physically under stress and in emergency situations. Note: Federal law prohibits a person convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence from carrying a firearm.
First consideration will be given to those applicants currently certified as a Law Enforcement Officer as mandated by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services.
