Law Enforcement Officer II
The Virginia State University Department of Police and Public Safety is seeking an experienced person to provide effective leadership to ensure the efficiency and the effectiveness of law enforcement and public safety service to the University commune by managing Administrative Support Operations, Investigations, administrative processes, resources and programs of the department.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Will serve as the next level higher commander in the absence of the Chief and/or Deputy Chief to ensure the Department of Police and Public Safety performs at its’ expected level. Will provide leadership to Police Operations, Parking Services, Police Administrative Services and Investigations in the areas of record keeping, supply and logistics, case management, evidence collection, preparation for court appearances and scheduling of daily work activities. Will function as the University Continuity Of Operations (COOP) Coordinator. Will develop, manage and evaluate police response to special events on the University campus. Will ensure all appropriate administrative files and records are maintained for the Investigations Section in accordance with state law. Will protect life, property, and enforce the laws of the Commonwealth, as well as, regulations of the University within appropriate jurisdictional confines
Must have at least four years of police supervisory experience. Considerable knowledge of the principles and techniques of law enforcement, security, crime prevention, and investigation; administrative functions to include policy, budget, and supervision of personnel. Considerable knowledge of the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia and of management concepts related to management of a diverse police force. Must have knowledge in the use of carried weapons and firearms and other job relevant police equipment. Demonstrated ability to plan and implement a law enforcement, security and public safety program or a portion for an independent agency or institution; to organize and direct a law enforcement/security force; to analyze law enforcement/security and safety problems. Demonstrated ability to function mentally and physically under stress and emergency situations, and to communicate effectively with diverse groups of people both verbally and in writing and to interpret laws, policies and regulations governing operations. Must possess certification as a police officer as mandated by Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) or the ability to obtain within six months of hire.
