Information Technology Specialist II
The Network Services Engineer will support of the University’s data and network environment to include provisioning, management, administration and troubleshooting of the data network and infrastructure. This position will report directly to the Data Center Manager.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide technical support of VSU’s data network environment to include provisioning, managing, and troubleshooting of the data network and infrastructure equipment such as routers, switches, access points, WAN, LAN, WLAN, security (SSL VPN, firewalls, packet shaping, web filters, IPS/IDS), VoIP, and network management and administration. The network services engineer will install, configure, and maintain network hardware and software components of complex, highly available, and highly redundant enterprise systems. Ensure that all the University’s network and infrastructure installations and upgrades are in accordance with the Commonwealth of Virginia Information Technology Security Standards (SEC-501), University’s policies, and industry best practices. Plan and support network and computing infrastructure in new construction and renovation projects to ensure the Information Technology design standards are met in the network closets. Provide technical leadership in cable, copper, fiber, port level installations, maintenance, troubleshooting and testing. Ensure all University infrastructure is in compliance with Building Industry Consulting Service International (BICISI) Cabling Standards. Maintain cabling and fiber test records and inventory. Develop and update technical documentation for the University’s underground cabling, fiber, and network infrastructure. Document the network problems and resolutions for future reference. Be involved in network projects while provide technical assistance to the Project Management Office (PMO).
Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, related field, or equivalent experience. Substantial experience installing, maintaining, and configuring Juniper and/or Cisco devices (routers, switches, firewalls, AP’s) and other LAN/WAN/WLAN devices. Experience maintaining infrastructure such as cable (fiber optic, coax, and copper), VoIP, and data security systems. Must possess strong communication, interpersonal, organizational, and leadership skills. Ability to quickly analyze data and problem solve. JNCIA, CCNA, CCDA, or equivalent experience.
JNCIS, JNCIP, CCNP, CCDP, or equivalent experience. Experience implementing and supporting a network infrastructure in a higher education environment.
