Education Support Specialist II


 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Provides an array of diversified mental health services to promote healthy lifestyles and overall mental wellness of enrolled students at Virginia State University. To provide a range of therapeutic and psycho-educational counseling services. To coordinate and implement comprehensive educational, cultural and social programs designed to combat bias, bigotry and racism, while promoting intercultural dialogue, awareness and respect for diversity. Supervising peer leaders and implementation of outreach programming. Provide awareness and educational programming on mental health and behavioral health issues as well as cultural diversity designed for college students; maintain a resource room consisting of support literature and technology; co-sponsor events with student organizations to enable students to become active participants in promoting awareness of  mental health and behavioral health issues as well as cultural diversity. Provide counseling to students to with mental health and behavioral health issues as well as cultural diversity who are self or administratively referred; provide general mental health counseling and interventions. Collaborate with other units in the identification and referral of students having problems with affect their appropriate function within and outside the classroom. Initiate and conduct surveys and program evaluations to measure or assess program utilization and effectiveness. Participate in professional development activities to ensure the provision of best practices in the mental health delivery system (i.e. in-service trainings, conferences, seminars, etc) as well as self care practices. Serves as liaison with other departments at the university and with outside agencies as appropriate. Serves on university committees and task groups as required. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Master’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, or Counseling or equivalent combination of experience and education is required. Extensive knowledge of DSM nomenclature, community resources and protocols, advanced counseling, assessment and communication skills, ability to coordinate programs, conduct program evaluation and work within a holistic service delivery system. Must have knowledge of community health concepts and practices. Must demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively (orally and written).
