Information Technology Specialist II
The Server System Engineer will manage all efforts involved in supporting, customizing, installing, and maintaining the network servers used to conduct operations at Virginia State University. This position will report directly to the Deputy Chief Information Officer (CIO) of IT Operations.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Server System Engineer provide technical leadership in supporting the Windows, Linux, and Red Hat server administration, monitoring and diagnostic tools, vulnerability assessments and scans, testing and validation to ensure server and system integrity, and performing capacity planning. The selected candidate will coordinate all University’s administrative and third-party network server installations and upgrades are in accordance with the Commonwealth of Virginia Information Technology Security Standards (SEC-501) IT Security Hardening and IT Continuity Planning, University’s IT Security policies and procedures, and industry best practices. The responsible person will provide engineering and design baselines for all new implementations, existing server systems, and hardware upgrades to improve performance. The individual will participate or provide consultation to the CIO, committees, user groups or special IT seminars that support the University’s information technology operations.
Considerable experience in server system administration for Microsoft Exchange and Active Directory, Microsoft SQL Server, Banner ERP Suite, Blackboard, WebFocus, eVA Integration middleware, Pharos/Uniprint, VTLS Virtua, and/or Oracle. Working knowledge in Solaris, Red Hat, Centos, VMware, and/or Microsoft Server operating environments. Experience in installing, configuring, and maintaining servers running various OS platforms, hands-on hardware and software troubleshooting experience, familiarity with TCP/IP protocols, database administration, and/or webserver /site administration. Proven analytical and problem-solving abilities. Ability to work on multiple projects concurrently. Strong interpersonal communication skills and the ability to maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, vendors, and the public. Bachelor's degree in Computer Science and 5-8 years experience providing server system administration in a networked environment including troubleshooting, training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
ITIL, MCSA, and/or Sun Solaris Certification. Prior experience working in a higher education environment preferable.
