Prospect Researcher

Office of Institutional Advancement

This position will be responsible for conducting a research program which will support the University’s overall fundraising objectives.  The researcher’s role is to assist in identifying opportunities and potential donors, to include individuals, companies, foundations and organizations that have the capacity to provide philanthropic support to the University by compiling, analyzing, verifying and presenting data/research on gift prospects.  

Duties and Responsibilities:

Successful candidate will produce in-depth individual, corporate, and foundation profiles on major gift prospects; prepare briefing notes; acquire and analyze financial information; identify new prospects through proactive research; continually update research skills as necessary; provide training on prospect management, and work closely with Development staff to build collaborative and effective relationships with all institutional advancement staff.  Also, will maintain alumni and donor database on new and existing major gift prospective donors, alumni, volunteers and friends using a variety of print and electronic resources; support and improve business processes relating to identified institutional fundraising priorities (campaigns, capital projects, research, and student activities); monitor, evaluate, and report metrics related to donor activities; provide credible and accurate estimates of resources and timeliness required for projects and activities undertaken; will support multiple fundraising programs within the VSU Office of Institutional Advancement, including major and planned gifts fundraising, campaigns (capital, endowment and comprehensive), annual giving, grant writing gift records and stewardship.  Conducts and/or oversees special strategic research projects to analyze database for identification of major gift prospects for solicitation assignments, e.g., data mining electronic screening; and prepare and distribute in-depth biographical and financial profiles and research reports for prospect identification, cultivation and solicitations.



A Bachelor’s degree in Business/Marketing or related field and/or equivalent combination of training and work experience is required. Master’s degree preferred.  Must have three or more years of fundraising and/or research experience is required.  Candidates must have strong organizational, analytical, telephone, interpersonal communication skills.  Successful candidate must have demonstrated record of meeting deadlines; demonstrated experience with using the Internet and Microsoft Office Suite; demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks, projects and other activities simultaneously in high volume office; and demonstrated experience preparing reports and presentations is required.  Attention to detail, an aptitude for logical thinking, and strong time management skills are essential.  Demonstrated experience with Raiser’s Edge and Banner is preferred.
