Major Gift Officer

Office of Institutional Advancement

These positions are primarily responsible for identifying, cultivating, soliciting and the stewardship of major gifts from alumni, parents, friends and sponsors.  These positions are assigned to do fundraising for assigned colleges and departments within the University. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

Successful candidate will design and implement an annual fund raising plan based on university objectives and assigned priorities, working in conjunction with the deans, program directors and the AVP of Institutional Advancement; advise the dean and faculty on strategies for obtaining private gifts for identified needs; develop and manage a major gift portfolio of 125-150 active major gift prospects; responsible for 130 prospect visits (including face-to-face scheduled meetings) write detailed and timely reports on each contact; work with offices of (Communications and Marketing, Constituent Relations and Advancement Information Services) to design and implement recognition and stewardship activities for donors and prospects affiliated with assigned colleges and departments; establish fundraising goals and objectives with revenue projections; files travel expense reports on a timely basis during cultivation periods; collaborate with Director of Development and Grant Writer on generating grant proposals to increase corporate/foundation support to the university; facilitate development, implementation, and coordination of the colleges, departments, Advisory Boards and Boosters; and responsible for updating cultivation notes using Raiser’s Edge.


A Bachelor’s degree in Business or related field and/or equivalent combination of training and work experience is required.  A Master’s degree is preferred.  A minimum of 3-5 years of fundraising experience is required, preferably in higher education.  Must have proven ability to solicit and close major gift commitments; strong interpersonal and organizational skills are essential; strong verbal and written communication skills are required; must be willing to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends; and must be willing to travel.  Candidates must have strong organizational, analytical, telephone, interpersonal communication skills.  Successful candidate must have demonstrated record of meeting deadlines; demonstrated experience with using the Internet and Microsoft Office Suite; demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks, projects and other activities simultaneously in high volume office; and demonstrated experience preparing reports and presentations is required.  Attention to detail, an aptitude for logical thinking, and strong time management skills are essential.  Demonstrated experience with Raiser’s Edge and Banner is preferred.
