Office of the President


Reporting to the President, the Vice President for Strategic Initiatives and Chief Operations Officer is responsible for developing and driving the short and long-term strategic initiative processes, and its related annual and quarterly budgets, financial forecasts and analyses. Additionally, the position will be responsible for overseeing the development and delivery of management reporting environments, monitoring key performance indicators and driving university-wide financial performance initiatives.  The individual assists and supports units as they perform and pursue set targets and standards.  This individual will prepare, finalize and assess business strategies on a short term and long term basis.  Virtually all internal concerns are handled by this individual. 

The individual coordinates the flow of information through the organization.  This individual is responsible for creating a holistic view of the organization that includes all departments and their inter-related goals.

This individual periodically reviews the university’s current mission, goals, and various plans to ensure alignment with the operational direction and resource allocation that it at its disposal.  Develop plans that are aligned with the vision of the President and the relevant tenants of current plans.  Ensure mission and goals are consistent with evolving plans.  Outline and forecast all financial resources and implications associated with executing all aspects of planning quarterly, bi-annually, and annually.   Work with leadership team, as well as key personnel, in the development of comprehensive plans.  Ensure planning encompasses every operational component of the university and its constituencies. Develop clear and measurable deliverables for each operational area that can be reviewed quarterly, bi-annually, and annually.  Develop a metric for reviewing and assessing operational deliverable. Offers plan revisions where applicable as internal or external environment changes.

Develop and implement financial process/system for auditing and tracking identified/targeted resources; monitor all operational deliverables; develop and implement plans with operational departments to monitor their progress with implementing deliverables. Provide leadership to all personnel involved in implementation of various university short and long term initiatives.

Develop and implement operational processes and efficiencies associated with university deliverables; identify ineffective operational processes; create and lead work groups to address ineffective operational processes; develop and implement policies, procedures; and best practice SOPs for processes that impact the university direction.  The individual ensures that the quality, efficiency and effectiveness are evident.  Organizational policies and processes are consistently reviewed. 

The required qualifications for the position include: University graduation in a related field, a graduate degree and experience in higher education or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.  Individual must possess a minimum of 10 years combined leadership experience including five to eight years in a senior management role.  Must have direct management experience with large-scale initiatives involving significant dollar amounts and implications, a large staff, and involvement with diverse stakeholder groups.  Experience working with diverse groups and knowledge of the not for profit sector are preferred.  The successful candidate must have the ability to lead and motivate groups and individuals. Able to think creatively and strategically to successfully mediate and negotiate with individuals and groups internally and externally. Able to overcome obstacles, to cooperate, and to foster harmonious relations.  Strong project management skills are a must. Able to balance competing priorities, complex situations, and tight deadlines.  Proven leadership and consensus building skills. Solid and broad understanding of all aspects of fiscal management and information technology. Proven negotiation and mediation skills.  Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communications skills.
