DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Assistant Administrator for Programs in Cooperative Extension reports to the Associate Dean for Extension and works closely with the Associate Dean in providing overall administrative and programmatic leadership to the Virginia Cooperative Extension Program at Virginia State University, to include the program areas of ANR, FCS, 4-H Youth Development, Aquaculture and other special programs.  Additionally, the selected candidate will work cooperatively with Associate Administrator and the Virginia Cooperative Extension leadership team at Virginia Tech in planning, implementing, and evaluation the Cooperative Extension Program for the Commonwealth of Virginia.   The Assistant Administrator will supervise and provide leadership for Extension faculty/specialist/agents and other personnel; evaluate assigned employees’ performance and work; and, make recommendations for establishing and maintaining effective extension program staffing patterns and priorities.  The incumbent will be required to work with local, state, federal agencies and organizations, industry groups and diverse stakeholder in addressing clientele programming needs.  The successful candidate will have appointment in Extension and may have appointment in Teaching and/or Research as well.  The selected candidate will serve as a member of the VCE State staff, State Extension Leadership Council; participate in the collaborative work with University committees and other organizations, and attend national meetings and conferences. Additionally, the Assistant Extension Administrator will be responsible for engaging in professional activities related to research, presentations at local/state/national meetings; and significant service to the University, profession, students and the community.  The incumbent will work with the Extension Administrator as requested since the Extension Administrator has the ultimate responsibility for the Extension Program.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Doctorate in Agricultural Science, Agricultural Education, Cooperative Extension Education, Higher Education or related discipline.  Considerable knowledge of and experience with extension programs at the state and national level; extension programs administration; and, strategic planning, implementation and evaluation.  Demonstrated record of excellence in extension program development, implementation, evaluation and reporting.  Evidence of growing record in research and extension.  Demonstrated leadership abilities and experience supervising and evaluating programs and personnel. Ability to successfully interact directly with extension agents, specialist, administrators and other extension personnel across the state.  Demonstrated ability to work with culturally and ethnically diverse stakeholders and to supervise the pursuit of extramural funding.   Demonstrated ability to effectively network with organizations and agencies in program development and delivery.  Excellent communication, orally and in writing, and organizational skills.  The successful candidate must have proficient skills Microsoft Office Suite and alike.
