DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The 4-H Youth Specialist provides leadership and strategic planning in research, program development, and instruction in the area of 4-H Delivery Modes for paid and volunteer staff; outreach to diverse audiences, including the underserved and particularly diverse racial and ethnic populations and youth leadership and personal development.  The 4-H Specialist/Faculty will enhance exposure to and application of science, engineering and technology in 4-H and will develop teaching materials, and provide informal instructional programs for youth/adult partners/clientele, including Extension educators/agents.  The incumbent will assist the Virginia Association of Adult 4-H Volunteers; District 4-H agents/educators; and the Educational design Team Subcommittee-Programming and Evaluation, as appropriate.  The 4-H Youth specialist will provide support or State 4-H Intermediate Congress; participate in State 4-H staff meetings; promote positive image of 4-H, emphasizing its contributions in both the rural and urban areas; demonstrate commitment to diversity in programming; seek external funding to support research and educational programs related to 4-H and youth; prepare publications and scholarly works, articles, bulletins, and scientific articles for informational and educational purposes and perform other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by the Dean/Extension Administrator or his/her designee.  The incumbent will have appointment in Extension and may have appointment in Teaching and/or Research as well.  The successful candidate must be able to travel, to provide support to counties, participate in the collaborative work with committees and other organizations, and attend national meetings and conferences. 
 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Candidate should hold an earned doctorate with at least one graduate degree in agriculture, education, youth/child development, program management, sociology/social work or related field from a regionally accredited institution. The selected candidate should possess subject matter expertise and the ability to teach courses in one or more of the disciplines previously listed and should be familiar with STEM. The incumbent must demonstrate knowledge and experience in planning, conducting and evaluating participatory Extension or non-formal education programs in leadership, citizenship and volunteer development with special emphasis on at-risk programming. The successful candidate must also possess excellent written and oral communication skills, knowledge of child and human development; skills in the use of information technology and its appropriate and effective use in the development and delivery of educational programs. Knowledge of and competencies in the use of social media and facility in the use of a foreign language are highly desirable. The selected candidate must be committed to work with diverse clientele and have some experience in working with such audiences.
