VSU Welcomes New Communications Director

We are pleased to announce that Ms. Pamela Tolson will join the VSU Trojan Family as Director of Communications on August 1, 2016. As a senior member of the cabinet, Ms. Tolson will be responsible for developing, planning and executing a comprehensive communications program for VSU, which includes media relations, publications, social media, marketing and special events. She will represent the University at official functions on campus and in the community and serve as university spokesperson.
With 18 years of experience in public relations, Tolson comes to VSU from Saint Augustine’s University (SAU) in Raleigh, N.C., where she served as Director of Communications. Tolson increased social media presence and established a radio show highlighting the accomplishments of faculty, staff and students. She was instrumental in the communication department winning the Bronze Award for Marketing at the inaugural HBCUgrow Lead Conference in Greensboro, N.C.
Prior to SAU, Tolson worked at Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, Fla., where she served as Director of Media Relations. She was responsible for the overall direction, coordination and evaluation of media relations. She also served as a key contact for media development, and produced news and feature coverage of faculty, staff, students, events and activities. During her tenure at FAMU, Tolson assisted in the University winning an Award of Excellence from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), District III for its strategic plan to reverse the trend of negative news coverage. Other previous positions include Senior Communications Specialist at North Carolina Central University in Durham, N.C., and Assistant Director of University Relations and Marketing at Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) in Elizabeth City, N.C. Tolson received her bachelor’s degree in English with a concentration in news media from ECSU. We are fortunate to have her join our Trojan family as we partner together to tell our story.
