Published date: January 29, 2013
Virginia State University’s Athletic Department has adopted Harrowgate Elementary School for the 2013 school year. The purpose of the partnership is to provide the Harrowgate students with positive role models, lunch buddies, tutors and educational and social activities. The program will stress the importance of both education and athletics and also provide students with the motivation to work hard and achieve their goals.
Harrowgate Elementary school is located in southern Chesterfield County, Virginia and serves approximately 500 students in grades pre-kindergarten through fifth grade, including programs for MIMD, LD, ED and gifted students. Under the No Child Left Behind Act, Harrowgate Elementary is "Fully Accredited" and has met and surpassed "Adequate Yearly Progress" standards. In addition, Harrowgate Elementary has met Virginia AMO benchmarks for all subject areas and subgroups.
The VSU student-athletes kicked off the partnership by volunteering at the Harrowgate Family Fitness and Health Night on January 24, 2013. The event provided families with fun ways of keeping healthy and fit together. The evening featured a wide range of family activities including yoga, plyometrics and Zumba.
Upcoming events that the athletic department will participate in include field day on March 29, 2013 and carnival on March 22, 2013.
