Goodwyn Named First Academic Fellow

Published date: August 27, 2013

Virginia State University President Dr. Keith T. Miller has named Dr. Deborah Goodwyn as the University’s first Presidential Academic Fellow.

As Presidential Academic Fellow, Dr. Goodwyn will split time between teaching in the Department of Languages and Literature and assisting the President’s Office with a variety of academic and administrative projects.

President Miller said the position will also serve as a bridge between faculty and administration. “The Presidential Academic Fellow will provide Dr. Goodwyn with the opportunity to gain a better understanding of the administration of the University,” he said. “She will also bring a high level of academic experience to these administrative functions.”

Dr. Goodwyn has been a member of the VSU faculty since 1997.  She served as Chairperson of the Department of Languages and Literature from 2007 until 2013. Dr. Goodwyn has served as Chair of the Faculty Senate, Faculty Representative on the VSU Board of Visitors and Faculty Representative on the Presidential Transition Team.  In the past year, she co-wrote scripts for President Miller’s “Building a Better World” campaign. The National Capital Chesapeake Bay Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences recently awarded her work an Emmy Award in the category of Writer-Short Form.

In announcing the appointment, Dr. Miller stated, “One of my goals for the coming year is to promote excellence throughout our campus. For this position, we were seeking someone with significant experience at VSU; someone vested in VSU and someone with the desire to expand their professional horizons. I am confident Dr. Goodwyn will be an asset in this endeavor.”

“I am excited about this unique opportunity to work with Dr. Miller, said Dr. Goodwyn. “I look forward to learning about higher education from an administrative perspective.”
