Trojans Claim 2014 CIAA Title

Published date: November 17, 2014

The VSU Trojans claimed the 2014 CIAA Championship Title on November 15 by defeating the Winston-Salem State Rams 21-17. The Trojans' last championship was in 1996.

Freshman quarterback Niko Johnson made his college debut, deftly leading VSU’s offense. With 2:59 left in the fourth quarter, Johnson sealed the victory with a 25-yard touchdown run. He finished the game with 76 yards on 13 carries and completed 12 of 19 passes for 125 yards. These efforts earned Johnson game MVP.

Early on, the Trojans took advantage of Ram mishaps. Dontrell Jones returned a WSSU fumble for a 69-yard touchdown to put the Trojans on the board. Elder Hudson pounced on a fumble in the end zone early in the second quarter to give VSU a 14 - 0 lead. Kavon Bellamy was a key player for the Trojans as well, rushing for 68 yards and hauling in two receptions for 48 yards.

Head coach and the 2014 CIAA Football Coach of the Year Latrell Scott prepared the Trojans for the championship with their "business as usual" system. "We've been focused this entire season. I just wanted to make sure we weren't satisfied with just being here," said Scott.

The Trojans advance to the NCAA Division II playoffs as a number three seed. The playoff game will be hosted for the first time on VSU’s campus on Saturday, November 22 in Rogers Stadium. The Trojans will play the number 6 seed, the Long Island University-Post Pioneers of Brookville, N.Y.
