Law Enforcement Officer I
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide efficient law enforcement and public safety service to the University community. Protects life, property, and enforces the laws of the Commonwealth, as well as, rules and regulations of the University within appropriate jurisdictional confines. Conducts campus patrols, to include foot patrol; investigates complaints, suspicious activities, crime, and traffic accidents; makes arrest, issues citations and carry firearms. Provides court testimony and initiates written reports. Conducts community policing/crime prevention activities by providing presentations to students, faculty and staff. Operate police communications equipment and all other law enforcement equipment and duties.
Possess knowledge of law enforcement concepts and fundamentals and be proficient in the use of department issued firearm. Possess a valid Virginia Driver’s License with a clean driving history. Demonstrated ability communicating effectively both orally and in writing. The selected candidate must be able to function mentally and physically under stress and in emergency situations. Must be a U.S. citizen. Must be 21 years of age. Must be able to work rotating shifts, to include weekends and holidays. Must not have been convicted of a felony, misdemeanor crime of domestic violence or offenses of moral turpitude. Graduation from an accredited high school course of study or successful completion of a GED. Some college or Bachelor’s degree preferred. Preference will be given to candidates who are Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) certified Law Enforcement Officer (Police Officer) or previously certified police officers.
Successful completion of in-depth background investigation to include, reference checks, fingerprint based criminal history check (including sexual offender registry checks), degree validation, DMV (driving history) records checks and license, will be completed on the selected candidate. Additionally, the successful candidate will be required to complete a Statement of Economic Interests as a condition of employment. Continued employment is contingent upon successful compliance with mandatory training standards for the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services.
