Law Enforcement Officer II
Duties and responsibilities
Serves as the Day/Night Patrol Commander. The Lieutenant makes independent decisions daily to ensure continuity of police services to the VSU community. Directs the activities of by utilizing advanced law enforcement techniques and modern practices in human resource management. Participates in the Department’s community liaison projects with the VSU community. Assists with the planning, management, and supervision of police response to events on campus as designated by University policy and Chief of Police (or designee). Provides appropriate administrative reports to the Chief of Police as required. Serves as the next level higher commander in the absence of the Captain, Deputy Chief and Chief of Police.
Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or a related field or equivalent combination of education, training and experience, to include graduation from police supervisory/leadership school. Must possess certification as a police officer as mandated by Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services. Successful candidate must have significant law enforcement experience and considerable supervisory experience at or above the law enforcement/police sergeant level. Considerable knowledge of the principles and techniques of law enforcement, security, crime detection and prevention, and investigation; working knowledge of administrative functions in the areas of policy and supervision; considerable knowledge of the state and local municipality laws and management concepts related to a diverse police force; and, skill to use firearms and other job related police equipment. The successful candidate must have the ability to plan, organize, implement and direct a law enforcement, security/public safety program; ability to interpret laws, policies and regulations governing police/security operations; ability to analyze law enforcement/security and safety problems and/develop/implement resolutions; and, must function mentally and physically under stress and emergency situations. Effective communications skills, orally and in writing, is required. Must have a valid Virginia Driver’s License and clear driving record. Must not have been convicted of a felony or a crime involving moral turpitude. Considerable understanding of advanced law enforcement concepts and human resource management required. Must be a U.S. citizen and at least 21 years of age.
Successful completion of in-depth background investigation to include, reference checks, fingerprint based criminal history check (including sexual offender registry checks), degree validation, DMV (driving history) records checks and license, will be completed on the selected candidate. Additionally, the successful candidate will be required to complete a Statement of Economic Interests as a condition of employment. Continued employment is contingent upon successful compliance with mandatory training standards for the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services.
